Physiotherapy After Knee and Hip Replacement in Newmarket

Spectrum Physiotherapy in Newmarket specializes in rehabilitation after total knee and total hip replacement. We work closely with local surgeons, and our clinic in the Dixon Medical Centre at 531 Davis Drive is about 400 metres from Southlake Regional Health Centre, so you can start physiotherapy close to where you had your surgery.

Your rehab plan is built around your surgeon’s instructions and your own goals, whether that’s walking without a cane, managing the stairs at home, getting back to golf, or simply moving through your day with less pain. We also help people prepare for surgery and recover from other orthopaedic, spinal and general surgeries.

More than 117,000 hip and knee replacements were performed in Canada in 2021–2022, and a growing share are now done as day surgery (Canadian Institute for Health Information). That means more of the recovery happens at home and in community physiotherapy, which makes a clear, well-guided rehab plan especially important.

Rehab After Knee or Hip Replacement

Rehabilitation after a joint replacement usually moves through several stages. The timing is different for everyone and always follows your surgeon’s protocol.

  • Early recovery: managing pain and swelling, gentle range-of-motion exercises, and walking safely with a walker or cane.
  • Restoring movement: improving how far your knee bends and straightens, or how freely your hip moves, and building a more normal walking pattern.
  • Building strength and function: strengthening the thigh, hip and core muscles, practising stairs, getting in and out of a car, and standing up from lower chairs.
  • Balance and return to activity: balance training, walking longer distances without an aid when appropriate, and getting back to activities such as gardening, travel or golf.

Please bring any instructions, precautions or exercise sheets from your surgical team to your first visit so we can follow them closely.

Preparing for Surgery and Other Surgeries We Help With

Preparing for surgery (prehab). Physiotherapy before a knee or hip replacement can help you build strength, keep the joint moving, practise using a walker or cane, and plan for your first weeks at home. Starting surgery stronger and better prepared can make the early stages of recovery feel more manageable. Learn more about pre-surgery physiotherapy (prehab).

Other surgeries. We also provide rehabilitation after spinal surgery, other orthopaedic surgeries such as ligament, tendon and fracture repairs, and neurological, cancer and thoracic surgeries. Each program is tailored to the procedure and to your surgical team’s recommendations.

What Treatment May Include

Exercise is the foundation of post-surgical rehabilitation. Depending on your surgery and stage of recovery, your plan may include:

  • Progressive strengthening and range-of-motion exercises
  • Walking (gait), stair and balance training
  • Manual therapy to ease stiffness and improve joint movement
  • A home exercise program so you keep progressing between visits
  • Supporting treatments such as massage therapy or acupuncture to help manage pain and muscle tension, when appropriate

We offer direct billing to many extended health insurance plans. For older adults, our physiotherapy for seniors and year-round Fall Prevention Program can help you keep building strength and balance after your rehab is complete.

Post-Surgery Physiotherapy FAQ

It depends on your surgery and your surgeon’s instructions. Your surgical team will tell you when it’s safe to start. If you can, contact us before your surgery so we can plan your first appointment.

You don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist in Ontario. Please bring your surgeon’s protocol, precautions or discharge instructions to your first visit so your rehab follows them. Some insurance plans require a referral for reimbursement, so check your plan.

Yes. Many patients attend their first appointments with a walker or cane, and your physiotherapist will help you progress safely as you’re ready. The clinic is in the Dixon Medical Centre at 531 Davis Drive, and we validate parking.

Without guided rehab, it’s common to be left with stiffness, weaker muscles and a less confident walking pattern, which can make everyday tasks harder and slow your return to the activities you enjoy. A structured, progressive program helps you get the most out of your surgery.

Yes. We offer direct billing to many extended health insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend confirming your benefits before your first visit.
