Physiotherapy for Seniors in Newmarket

At Spectrum Physiotherapy in Newmarket, we help older adults stay strong, steady and independent. Our physiotherapy for seniors (sometimes called geriatric physiotherapy or geriatric rehabilitation) focuses on balance and fall prevention, arthritis and joint pain, recovery after knee or hip replacement, and keeping up the strength and mobility you need for everyday life.

Every plan starts with an individualized assessment of your health history, movement, strength, balance and goals. Treatment is built around safe, progressive exercise, with hands-on care and other therapies added when they help, and is adjusted as you progress. We see seniors from Newmarket and across York Region.

How Physiotherapy Helps Older Adults

Many changes that come with age, such as weaker leg muscles, stiffer joints, slower reactions and reduced balance, respond well to the right kind of exercise. Physiotherapy helps older adults keep doing the things that matter to them, from walking and climbing stairs to gardening, travelling and playing with grandchildren.

Your physiotherapist will look at how you move, where you feel unsteady or sore, and what you want to be able to do. Together, you’ll set realistic goals and a plan that fits your health, energy and comfort level. You’ll also learn exercises to do at home, because consistent practice between visits is what builds lasting strength and balance.

We also work with older adults living with osteoporosis, chronic pain, or the after-effects of a stroke or other illness, adapting each program to the person’s abilities.

Balance, Arthritis and Joint Replacement Rehab

Balance and fall prevention. An estimated 20% to 30% of Canadian seniors fall each year, and falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among older Canadians (Public Health Agency of Canada). Your physiotherapist will assess your balance, walking and leg strength, then build a program to improve steadiness and confidence. Learn more about physiotherapy for balance and fall prevention, or ask about our year-round small-group Fall Prevention Program.

Arthritis and joint pain. Gentle, progressive exercise is one of the most effective ways to manage osteoarthritis in the knees, hips, hands and back. Treatment focuses on strengthening the muscles around painful joints, improving range of motion and helping you stay active with less discomfort. See our page on physiotherapy for arthritis pain.

Before and after joint replacement. Physiotherapy can help you prepare for knee or hip replacement surgery and rebuild movement, strength and walking afterwards, following your surgical team’s recommendations. Learn more about pre- and post-surgical physiotherapy.

What Treatment May Include

Exercise is the foundation of physiotherapy for seniors. Depending on your needs, your plan may include:

  • Strength and balance exercises: progressive exercises to build leg and core strength, improve steadiness and make everyday movements easier
  • Walking (gait) training: improving the way you walk, including advice on using a cane or walker safely
  • Manual therapy: gentle hands-on techniques to ease stiffness and improve joint movement
  • Home exercise program: simple exercises to keep progressing between visits
  • Home safety advice: practical tips on footwear, stairs, lighting and bathroom safety
  • Supporting treatments: such as acupuncture, massage therapy, shockwave therapy or electrotherapy, when they’re appropriate for your condition

These treatments are chosen to support your exercise program and are adjusted as your strength, balance and confidence improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physiotherapy help with arthritis?
Yes. Exercise-based physiotherapy is a recommended first-line treatment for osteoarthritis. Strengthening the muscles around a painful joint and improving its range of motion can reduce pain and make daily activities easier.

Do I need to have fallen to get a balance assessment?
No. Many people come in because they feel less steady than they used to or are worried about falling. Addressing balance and strength early is the best way to stay independent.

Can you help if I use a cane or walker?
Yes. Treatment is adapted to your current mobility, and your physiotherapist can also check that your cane or walker is the right height and that you’re using it safely.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. In Ontario, you can book directly with a physiotherapist. Some extended health plans require a referral for reimbursement, so check your plan before your first visit.

Do you offer direct billing?
Yes. We offer direct billing to many extended health insurance plans. Our clinic is in the Dixon Medical Centre at 531 Davis Drive, close to Southlake Regional Health Centre.
